Pedestrian killed on southbound I-280 in San Jose Area

A vehicle struck a pedestrian late Tuesday night on southbound Interstate 280 near the 10th Street off-ramp in San Jose, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was reported at 10:20 p.m. when callers described a male pedestrian walking on the right shoulder and against traffic on the off-ramp attempting to enter the freeway. Logs confirmed a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision with a fatality at 10:46 p.m. An ambulance was requested at 10:33 p.m.

CHP units arrived on scene at 10:32 p.m. and reported two hazards in the roadway along with disabled vehicles. Parties were out of their vehicle in the middle lanes with the pedestrian in front of the vehicle, and all lanes were stopped.

An additional unit was requested at 10:34 p.m. to close the mainline and divert traffic off to Virginia Street. The state transportation department was notified at 10:31 p.m. and again at 10:48 p.m.

The pedestrian’s identity was not immediately available, and the cause of the collision was not detailed in the logs.
