A head-on crash on Otay Lakes Road near mile marker 4.5 in the San Diego area left one person dead Friday morning.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the collision was reported at 11:41 a.m. and involved a gray Honda Civic and another vehicle. Border Patrol notified authorities they were on scene but lacked vehicle descriptions. Fire personnel were on scene, and one person was transported by ambulance to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest.
CHP officers arrived on scene around 11:59 a.m. and stopped all traffic in both directions for about an hour. Border Patrol assisted with traffic control.
Authorities issued a Sig Alert at 12:13 p.m. for the closure, which lasted approximately two hours. The roadway reopened at 2:28 p.m., and the Sig Alert was canceled at 2:57 p.m.
Two tow trucks were requested at 12:13 p.m. for vehicles with major front-end damage, including one 20 feet down an embankment. Media arrived on scene at 1:31 p.m.
CHP units cleared the scene around 3:07 p.m.
Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
