One dead in big rig rollover on westbound I-10 in Indio Area

A tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 10 westbound near Red Cloud Mine Road at mile marker 94 in the Indio area early in the morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the crash was reported at 2:12 a.m. after a witness saw the big rig flip over onto the right-hand side. An iPhone crash notification was also received, and a good Samaritan in a Kenworth T680 truck stopped on the right-hand side to provide visual assistance for officers. Cal Fire was notified and arrived on scene, reporting the vehicle appeared disabled. The coroner was notified at 3:28 a.m.

CHP requested a heavy-duty tow truck for the overturned tractor-trailer, which was loaded with dryers and weighed about 13,000 pounds, with possible hazardous materials from more than 100 gallons of spilled fuel on dirt and asphalt. The tow truck was to access the site via Red Cloud Mine Road under the Interstate 10 freeway between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

CHP units were assigned at 2:14 a.m., enroute at 2:34 a.m., and arrived on scene at 3:24 a.m. Additional units arrived at 3:32 a.m., and one unit cleared the scene at 2:19 a.m.

The identity of the deceased and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
