One Dead in Big Rig Overturn on I-10 West in Indio Area

A tractor-trailer overturned on westbound Interstate 10 near the Eagle Mountain Road exit in Indio early Saturday morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the crash was reported at 2:13 a.m. when a witness saw the big rig flip over to the right side of the roadway. Logs show authorities notified Cal Fire, which arrived on scene and noted the vehicle appeared abandoned.

A CHP sergeant requested a heavy-duty tow truck for the 13,000-pound tractor and trailer, which was loaded with dryers and on its side. The sergeant noted possible hazardous materials from more than 100 gallons of fuel, along with dirt and asphalt at the scene. A tow company was notified for a super heavy recovery, with access via Red Cloud Road under the Interstate 10 freeway between eastbound and westbound lanes.

A good Samaritan in a Kenworth T680 truck stopped on the right side to provide visual assistance for officers. CHP units were assigned at 2:14 a.m., arrived on scene at 3:24 a.m. and cleared the area at 2:19 a.m.

The identity of the deceased and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
