Two killed in fiery crash on southbound I-880 in Hayward Area

A vehicle crashed into a wall on southbound Interstate 880 just north of Davis Street in Hayward early in the morning, leaving two people dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the crash was reported at 5:31 a.m. when a red sedan struck the right-hand-side wall. Logs indicate the driver remained inside the vehicle with no hazard lights activated. An ambulance was notified at 5:34 a.m., and fire personnel arrived on scene by 5:47 a.m., reporting a solo vehicle collision involving a gray sedan blocking the right side. Efforts to extract a party from the vehicle against a guardrail were underway amid a fire at 5:51 a.m., and fire personnel confirmed two deceased individuals at 5:57 a.m.

A traffic hazard involving a large piece of wood blocked the middle lane at 5:50 a.m., possibly contributing to the collision, with the No. 4 lane also blocked.

CHP units were assigned starting at 5:35 a.m., with arrivals on scene beginning at 5:47 a.m. and the scene cleared by 5:50 a.m. for one unit, while others remained until at least 6:07 a.m.

Identities of the deceased and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
