One Dead in Fiery Overturned SUV Crash on Southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire on Interstate 5 southbound just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was reported at 2:21 a.m. as a vehicle fire in the center divider. Callers described an overturned vehicle with front- and rear-end damage and two occupants initially seen walking around. The incident was transferred to Cal Fire, which arrived on scene. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The patrol later updated the incident from a car fire to a fatality, describing it as a solo-vehicle crash that resulted in a death. A coroner arrived on scene, and no mentions of ambulance requests or CPR efforts appeared in the logs.

The patrol requested a tow truck for the completely burned vehicle, identified as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining.

Units arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the area by 6:01 a.m.
