One Dead in Fiery Overturned SUV Crash on I-5 South in Coalinga Area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early in the morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:22 a.m. as a vehicle on fire in the center divider, with reporting parties advising that two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around. The call was transferred to Cal Fire, which arrived on scene. Logs later noted the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and the incident was updated from a car fire to a fatality at 6:01 a.m., described as a solo vehicle fatality. A coroner arrived on scene at 4:57 a.m.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene at 6:01 a.m.

Logs described the vehicle as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining, which was no longer attached to the vehicle. A tow truck was requested at 4:58 a.m. for the completely burned vehicle.

The identity of the deceased and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
