One dead in fiery solo-vehicle crash on southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

A vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead early in the morning.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was reported at 2:21 a.m. as a vehicle on fire in the center divider. Logs indicate the vehicle was overturned with possible front and rear end damage. A reporting party initially said two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around. The incident was later updated to a fatality involving a solo vehicle, with the coroner arriving on scene and a tow truck requested for the completely burned vehicle.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 2:37 a.m. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, and the incident was transferred to Cal Fire.

Logs show the vehicle was a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining attached. It was towed as a disabled vehicle.

The scene was cleared by 6:01 a.m.

Identities and the cause were not immediately available.
