One dead in fiery solo-vehicle crash on southbound I-5 in Coalinga area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 near Coalinga, leaving one person dead early Tuesday morning.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was reported at 2:21 a.m. as a vehicle on fire in the center divider. The logs noted the vehicle appeared to have front- and rear-end damage, with two occupants out of the vehicle and walking around. The incident was initially classified as a car fire and transferred to CalFire, which arrived on scene. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The classification was later changed to a fatality at 6:01 a.m., with logs describing it as a solo vehicle fatality. A coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., with the first arriving at 2:37 a.m. The vehicle was identified as a 2004 blue GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining attached.

The logs did not immediately provide the identity of the deceased or the cause of the crash.
