A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire that was later changed to a fatality. Logs indicate a single vehicle was involved.
The reporting party initially advised that two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around. The vehicle had front-end and rear-end damage and was overturned in the center divider.
The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. Fire personnel arrived on scene.
A coroner arrived on scene at 4:57 a.m. Authorities requested a tow truck for the completely burned vehicle, notifying a towing company at 4:58 a.m.
The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining.
CHP units arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m.
Identities and the cause were not immediately available.
