A vehicle crash and fire on southbound Interstate 5 near Coalinga left one person dead early in the morning.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire, with the problem later changed to a fatality at 6:01 a.m. Logs noted a solo vehicle fatality, with the coroner arriving on scene and a tow truck requested for the completely burned vehicle.
The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining, which was no longer attached.
Two occupants were initially reported out of the vehicle and walking around, but one person was pronounced dead.
The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames in the center divider just south of State Route 145, with fire crews arriving on scene.
CHP units were assigned starting at 2:23 a.m., arrived between 2:37 a.m. and 2:45 a.m., and cleared the scene between 5:08 a.m. and 6:01 a.m.
