One Dead in Fiery Overturned Crash on Southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire in the center divider and was later changed to a fatality at 6:01 a.m. Logs indicate a single-vehicle crash with the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.

Two occupants were initially reported outside the vehicle and walking around. Authorities later confirmed one fatality in the solo vehicle incident.

The vehicle was described as a 2004 blue GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining attached.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m.

Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
