A vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 5 near Coalinga left one person dead Tuesday morning.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire and later changed to a fatality at 6:01 a.m. The logs indicate a single-vehicle crash with the vehicle overturned in the center divider and fully engulfed in flames. A reporting party initially said two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around. The coroner arrived on scene at 4:57 a.m.
CHP officers arrived at the scene around 2:37 a.m. A tow truck was requested at 4:58 a.m. for the completely burned vehicle, described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining and no longer attached. The vehicle was towed as a disabled vehicle.
Units cleared the scene around 6:01 a.m. Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
