A vehicle overturned and caught fire on Interstate 5 southbound just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.
The California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 2:21 a.m., initially as a car fire before updating it to a fatality. Logs show the reporting party advised two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around, with the vehicle appearing to have front- and rear-end damage. Fire personnel arrived on scene, and the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. CHP later described it as a solo vehicle fatality, with the coroner arriving on scene and a tow truck requested for the completely burned vehicle.
CHP logs indicate the vehicle was a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining.
Units arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared by 6:01 a.m.
Identities and the cause were not immediately available.
