One Dead in Fiery Overturned Crash on Southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.

California Highway Patrol dispatch logs show the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire in the center divider, with reports of two occupants out of the vehicle and walking around. The call was transferred to Cal Fire, which arrived on scene. The incident was later changed from a car fire to a fatality at 6:01 a.m., with officers reporting a solo vehicle fatality.

Logs show the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames just south of State Route 145. A coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle, described as a 2004 blue GMC Yukon with front plate only, no longer attached.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene between 2:37 a.m. and 2:45 a.m., and cleared the scene between 5:08 a.m. and 6:01 a.m.

The identity of the deceased and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
