A vehicle fire following a crash on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead early Tuesday morning.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs show the incident was reported at 2:21 a.m. as a vehicle on fire in the center divider, with the problem later changed from a car fire to a fatality at 6:01 a.m. Logs indicate a solo vehicle fatality, with the coroner arriving on scene and a tow truck requested for a complete burn. No ambulance requests or CPR efforts were noted in the logs.
The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining, no longer attached to the vehicle, and subject to towing under Vehicle Code section 22651(g) for a disabled vehicle with an officer identification number of 020021.
A reporting party initially advised that two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around, but the incident was later confirmed as a solo vehicle fatality. The vehicle appeared to have front-end and rear-end damage, was overturned in the center divider and fully engulfed in flames, with the fire department notified and arriving on scene.
Units were assigned starting at 2:23 a.m., with arrivals on scene between 2:37 a.m. and 2:45 a.m., and the scene cleared between 5:08 a.m. and 6:01 a.m.
No lane closures or traffic breaks were detailed in the logs.
Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
