One killed in fiery rollover on southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

A vehicle caught fire and crashed on Interstate 5 southbound just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early in the morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a vehicle on fire in the center divider. Logs show the call was transferred to Cal Fire, with reports of the vehicle overturned and fully engulfed in flames. Two occupants were initially reported out of the vehicle and walking around, but the incident was later updated to a solo vehicle fatality, with the coroner notified. A tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., with the first arriving on scene at 2:37 a.m. The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining.

The scene was cleared by 6:01 a.m.

Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
