A vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead early in the morning.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs show the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire in the center divider, with the vehicle overturned and showing front- and rear-end damage. The reporting party initially said two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around, but the incident was later updated to a single-vehicle fatality, with the coroner arriving on scene. A tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.
CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., with the first arriving at 2:37 a.m. The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining. The incident was transferred to Cal Fire for the vehicle fire response.
The scene was cleared by 6:01 a.m. Identities and the cause were not immediately available.
