A crash on northbound U.S. 101 at Interstate 405 in the West Valley area left one person dead early in the morning.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 3:03 a.m., with details indicating a vehicle overturned and came to rest back on its wheels, along with debris scattered in the lanes and a black sedan partially blocking the slow lane. Logs later noted a request for a flatbed tow truck for a motorcycle, with the owner’s request to tow it to northbound 405 just south of Burbank Boulevard. Authorities notified the Los Angeles County coroner, who assigned case number 2026-03832, though an estimated time of arrival was unknown.
CHP units arrived on scene starting at 3:09 a.m., with fire department personnel reported on scene by 3:19 a.m. Logs indicated wood debris from a guardrail in the lanes, and officers requested a tow truck, which was notified and estimated to arrive in 10 minutes.
By 3:21 a.m., officers advised the best access was via northbound 405 to northbound 101, noting some ramps were blocked. They requested Caltrans for repairs to 100-150 feet of damaged guardrail and a hard closure to divert traffic to 405.
A SigAlert was issued at 3:28 a.m. for northbound 101 at 405, diverting traffic to 405, with the traffic management center notified and media informed. By 3:45 a.m., the No. 1 lane to westbound 101 was open, and the No. 2 lane to northbound 405 was open, while all others remained closed for an unknown duration.
Caltrans had an estimated arrival of 40 minutes, and logs indicated a need to shut down lanes 2 through 4 on northbound 101 at 405, with a transition road to southbound 405.
Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
