One dead in fiery crash on southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

Tuesday morning, a single-vehicle crash and fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire in the center divider. The reporting party said the vehicle appeared to have front-end and rear-end damage with two occupants out of the vehicle and walking around. The reporting party also transferred the call to Cal Fire, which arrived on scene. The incident was later changed from a car fire to a fatality at 6:01 a.m.

CHP logs show the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames south of State Route 145. Units arrived on scene at 2:37 a.m. and confirmed a single-vehicle fatality.

A coroner arrived on scene at 4:57 a.m. No ambulance requests or CPR efforts were noted in the logs.

The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate, which was no longer attached. A rotation tow truck was notified at 4:58 a.m. to remove the completely burned vehicle.

Units cleared the scene at 6:01 a.m.

Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
