Early morning, a vehicle crashed and caught fire on Interstate 5 southbound just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga, leaving one person dead.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was reported at 2:21 a.m. as a vehicle on fire in the center divider. Logs show the problem was later changed from a car fire to a fatality, with the coroner arriving on scene and a tow truck requested for a completely burned vehicle.
Logs indicate the vehicle overturned in the center divider with front-end and rear-end damage. A reporting party initially advised that two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around, but officers later described it as a solo vehicle fatality.
The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining.
Units arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared by 6:01 a.m.
