A vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead early Tuesday morning.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:22 a.m. as a vehicle on fire in the center divider, with reporting parties noting possible involvement in a traffic collision and two occupants out of the vehicle and walking around. The reporting party advised that fire personnel were on scene by 2:33 a.m., and the vehicle was fully engulfed by 2:37 a.m. The incident was updated from a car fire to a fatality at 6:01 a.m., with logs noting a solo vehicle fatality and notification of the coroner, who arrived on scene at 4:57 a.m.
CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., with arrivals beginning at 2:37 a.m. and the scene cleared by 6:01 a.m.
A tow truck was requested at 4:58 a.m. for a completely burned 2004 GMC Yukon, described as blue with only the front license plate remaining and no longer attached to the vehicle.
Identities of those involved and the cause of the incident were not immediately available.
