A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs show the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire, with the caller noting two occupants had exited the vehicle and were walking around. The status was later updated to a fatality involving a single vehicle, with the coroner notified and arriving on scene. A tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.
The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with front-end and rear-end damage, located in the center divider. It was reported as fully engulfed in flames shortly after the initial call.
Firefighters arrived on scene, and CHP units were assigned starting at 2:23 a.m., with the first arriving at 2:37 a.m. The scene was cleared by 6:01 a.m.
Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
