One Dead in Fiery Overturned Crash on Southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

Early Tuesday morning, a vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was reported at 2:21 a.m. as a vehicle fire in the center divider, with the problem later changed from car fire to fatality at 6:01 a.m. Logs noted a solo vehicle fatality, with the coroner arriving on scene at 4:57 a.m. No ambulance requests or CPR efforts were mentioned in the logs.

Callers reported the vehicle overturned in the center divider with front- and rear-end damage. Two occupants were initially out of the vehicle and walking around. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames by 2:37 a.m.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene between 2:37 a.m. and 2:45 a.m., and cleared the scene between 5:08 a.m. and 6:01 a.m.

A tow truck was notified at 4:58 a.m. for the completely burned vehicle, described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining and no longer attached.

No lane closures or traffic breaks were detailed in the logs.

The identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
