A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs show the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire, with the problem later changed to a fatality. Logs indicate a single-vehicle crash, with the coroner notified and arriving on scene.
The vehicle, described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with front-end and rear-end damage, was fully engulfed in flames in the center divider. Initial reports noted two occupants out of the vehicle and walking around, but the incident was updated to a solo vehicle fatality.
CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., with the first arriving on scene at 2:37 a.m. A tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle, and units cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m.
Authorities transferred the call to Cal Fire, which arrived on scene. Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
