One dead in fiery rollover on I-5 south near SR198 in Coalinga area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:22 a.m. as a vehicle fire in the center divider, with the reporting party advising that two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around. The vehicle was described as fully engulfed in flames, and the incident was later updated from a car fire to a fatality at 6:01 a.m., with officers confirming a solo vehicle fatality. A coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.

The vehicle was identified as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m.

The identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
