A vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 in the Coalinga area left one person dead early Tuesday morning.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs show the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire, with the reporting party advising that two occupants had exited the vehicle and were walking around. The problem was later changed from a car fire to a fatality, with officers confirming a solo vehicle fatality and notifying the coroner.
Logs indicate the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames in the center divider, with front-end and rear-end damage and appearing overturned. Firefighters arrived on scene.
A tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle, described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining.
CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene by 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m.
The identity of the deceased and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
