Early Sunday morning, a solo vehicle crash and fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was reported at 2:21 a.m. when a caller described a vehicle on fire in the center divider. The problem was initially logged as a car fire and later changed to a fatality. Logs noted the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, and a coroner arrived on scene. No ambulance requests or CPR efforts were mentioned in the logs.
The logs indicated the vehicle was overturned in the center divider with front-end and rear-end damage. A caller initially reported two occupants out of the vehicle and walking around, but the incident was later described as a solo vehicle fatality.
CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., with the first arriving at 2:37 a.m. A tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle, described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate attached.
Units cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m. Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
