One dead in fiery semi-truck crash on I-40 westbound in Barstow area

A crash involving three semitrucks on Interstate 40 westbound near the Desert Oasis Rest Area in Barstow left one person dead in the evening.

California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 6:53 p.m. Officers requested a coroner at 7:53 p.m. and notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office. No details on CPR efforts or ambulance requests were available in the logs.

The crash involved three semitrucks, with two fully engulfed in flames and fire spreading through nearby brush. Officers reported green flames coming from the scene and low visibility due to smoke on eastbound lanes.

All westbound lanes were closed, with a full hard closure requested by Cal Fire. Eastbound lanes had traffic stopped at the Desert Oasis Rest Area off-ramp, and a traffic break was implemented at Fort Cady.

Units arrived on scene starting at 6:58 p.m., with additional units enroute and at scene by 7:34 p.m. Towing services were requested for super duty recovery.

Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
