One Dead in Fiery Solo-Vehicle Crash on SB I-5 in Coalinga Area

A vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead early in the morning.

The California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 2:21 a.m. The call initially came in as a car fire but was later updated to a fatality involving a single vehicle. The coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.

Reporting parties said the vehicle was on fire in the center divider with possible collision involvement. Two occupants were initially reported out of the vehicle and walking around. The vehicle was described as a 2004 blue GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining attached.

Firefighters were notified and arrived on scene. CHP units responded starting at 2:23 a.m., arrived by 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m.

The identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
