A single-vehicle crash and fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead early Tuesday morning.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a vehicle on fire in the center divider, with reports of two occupants out of the vehicle and walking around. The incident was later updated to a car fire and then to a fatality at 6:01 a.m., described as a solo vehicle fatality. The coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.
The vehicle was identified as a 2004 blue GMC Yukon.
CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene starting at 5:08 a.m.
The vehicle was reported as fully engulfed in flames, and the call was transferred to Cal Fire.
Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the deceased or the cause of the crash.
