A vehicle crashed and caught fire on Interstate 5 southbound just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 2:21 a.m. The problem was initially logged as a car fire but later changed to a fatality involving a solo vehicle. A coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.
Two occupants were initially reported out of the vehicle and walking around. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames by 2:37 a.m.
The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with front-end and rear-end damage and only a front license plate remaining.
CHP units arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared by 6:01 a.m.
Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
