One Dead in Fiery Solo-Vehicle Crash on Southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire on Interstate 5 southbound just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga, leaving one person dead early Tuesday morning.

California Highway Patrol dispatch logs show the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire, with the caller noting two occupants out of the vehicle and walking around. The problem was later changed from car fire to fatality, with CHP reporting a single-vehicle death. A coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.

CHP logs indicate the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames in the center divider. Fire crews were notified and en route. The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with front-end and rear-end damage and only the front license plate remaining.

Units arrived on scene around 2:37 a.m. and cleared by 6:01 a.m.

Identities and the cause were not immediately available.
