One Dead in Fiery Solo-Vehicle Crash on Southbound I-5 in Coalinga Area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was initially reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire in the center divider, with the reporting party stating two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around. The logs indicate the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames by 2:37 a.m., and the classification was later changed from car fire to fatality at 6:01 a.m., described as a single-vehicle fatality. A coroner arrived on scene at 4:57 a.m., and no ambulance requests or CPR efforts were noted in the logs.

CHP units were assigned starting at 2:23 a.m., with the first unit arriving at the scene at 2:37 a.m. A tow truck was requested at 4:58 a.m. for the completely burned vehicle.

The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate, which was no longer attached.

Units cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m., and identities of those involved were not immediately available.
