One dead in fiery solo-vehicle crash on southbound I-5 near SR198 in Coalinga area

A vehicle overturned and caught fire in the center divider of southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga early Tuesday morning, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire, with the reporting party stating two occupants had exited the vehicle and were walking around. The incident was later updated from a car fire to a fatality, with logs noting a solo vehicle fatality and the coroner arriving on scene. A tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.

The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining attached.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m.

Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
