One dead in I-5 South crash in Westminster Area

A crash on Interstate 5 southbound near Lincoln Avenue in Westminster left at least one person dead early in the morning.

California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 3:20 a.m., with a gray sedan going off the roadway embankment into the No. 4 lane and debris scattered in the lanes. Logs indicated two people were trapped and unconscious in the vehicle, and authorities notified an ambulance service.

Fire crews blocked the slow lane. CHP officers requested a traffic break and set up a flare pattern, taking the Nos. 3 and 4 lanes and stopping all lanes temporarily. The right two lanes and the Lincoln off-ramp were closed with flares, while other lanes remained open.

Units were assigned starting at 3:25 a.m., with some arriving on scene by 3:30 a.m. and others by 3:42 a.m.

Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
