One Dead in Northbound I-5 Crash in Altadena Area

A traffic collision early Monday morning on northbound Interstate 5 just south of Burbank Boulevard left one person dead.

The crash was reported at 3:38 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, which initially described a dark-colored Honda Civic that struck a center divider and came to rest with its lights out. The incident was updated from a collision with unknown injuries to one requiring ambulance response, with Burbank Fire Department notified.

Duplicate calls reported a possible gray Toyota Camry that struck a pole on the right shoulder, and an Apple Watch sent an automated crash notification. CHP units arrived on scene by 3:52 a.m. and confirmed all lanes stopped on northbound Interstate 5 just south of Burbank.

Authorities requested a tow truck for the Honda Civic stuck on top of a guardrail and issued a SigAlert at 3:59 a.m. for a 30-minute closure of all lanes on the main portion of the freeway, with one person transported to an unknown location.

By 4:08 a.m., all lanes were held except the high-occupancy vehicle lane, which was temporarily allowed for traffic. A hard closure was requested, and access was noted as best from the wrong way via the Burbank on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5.

The identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.

The CHP recorded the crash at GPS coordinates: 34.185389 -118.317917
