A vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga left one person dead early in the morning.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 2:21 a.m. The problem was changed from a car fire to a fatality, with logs noting a single-vehicle fatality. A coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for a completely burned vehicle.
The reporting party advised that two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around. The vehicle appeared to have front-end and rear-end damage and was fully engulfed in flames in the center divider.
Logs noted the vehicle was a 2004 blue GMC Yukon with the front license plate no longer attached.
CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene at 6:01 a.m.
Identities and causes were not immediately available.
