One Dead in Overturned Vehicle Fire on Southbound I-5 Near SR198 in Coalinga Area

Early Tuesday morning, a vehicle overturned and caught fire on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 198 near Coalinga, leaving one person dead.

California Highway Patrol dispatch logs show the incident was first reported at 2:21 a.m. as a car fire in the center divider, with the reporting party stating two occupants were out of the vehicle and walking around. The logs indicate the vehicle appeared to have front- and rear-end damage and was fully engulfed in flames by 2:37 a.m. The incident was updated at 6:01 a.m. from a car fire to a fatality, with officers reporting a solo vehicle fatality. A coroner arrived on scene, and a tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle.

CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene by 2:37 a.m. and cleared the area by 6:01 a.m.

The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only a front license plate, which was no longer attached.

Authorities transferred the call to Cal Fire, which arrived on scene.

Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
