A single-vehicle crash late Monday night on southbound State Route 17 just north of Glenwood Drive in the Santa Cruz area left one person dead.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the crash was reported at 9:59 p.m. and initially classified as a traffic collision with unknown injuries before being updated to a traffic collision with ambulance en route. Authorities later confirmed it as a fatality.
A witness reported the solo vehicle collision, with the vehicle overturning before landing back on its wheels about 30 feet off the roadway in a ditch on the right-hand side. Debris was scattered in the roadway, but the vehicle was not blocking lanes.
Fire department units arrived on scene shortly after 10 p.m. to provide medical aid.
CHP officers requested a tow truck for the vehicle, which was later designated as an evidence tow. The No. 2 lane was shut down, and a traffic break was initiated from Summit Road.
The coroner was notified. A CHP sergeant advised that the victim’s wife was on scene and notified.
Both lanes were reopened at 1:11 a.m., with the incident coded as a solo vehicle fatality.
Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
