A crash on U.S. Highway 101 northbound at the Tennant Avenue onramp in the Hollister-Gilroy area left one person dead early in the morning.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 3:08 a.m. A reporting party pulled to the right shoulder after spotting a person and plastic pieces in the right lane near the off-ramp, creating a traffic hazard in the slow lane. Authorities requested an ambulance as a precaution and notified the county sheriff’s office for medical response. Fire and emergency medical services arrived on scene. A coroner was requested, and fire personnel later sprayed down the roadway.
The No. 3 lane was closed, with a traffic break started northbound just north of San Martin. The northbound onramp to Tennant Avenue was closed, and Caltrans was requested for road closure in the No. 2 and No. 3 lanes. Authorities notified the Department of Transportation for a hard closure.
CHP units were assigned at 3:09 a.m. and arrived on scene by 3:19 a.m. A sergeant arrived on scene at 4:42 a.m. Fire personnel arrived at 5:16 a.m. and completed their tasks by 5:29 a.m., after which Caltrans opened the roadway and Morgan Hill police could reopen the onramp. Units cleared the scene by 5:34 a.m.
Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
