A vehicle overturned and caught fire on Interstate 5 southbound just north of State Route 198 in the Coalinga area, leaving one person dead early Tuesday morning.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reported the incident at 2:21 a.m. The call initially came in as a car fire but was later changed to a fatality involving a solo vehicle. A coroner arrived on scene, and authorities requested a tow truck for the completely burned vehicle.
Reporting parties said the vehicle was in the center divider with front-end and rear-end damage. Two occupants were initially reported out of the vehicle and walking around. Fire crews arrived on scene.
The vehicle was described as a blue 2004 GMC Yukon with only the front license plate remaining, which was no longer attached. It was towed as a disabled vehicle.
CHP units were assigned at 2:23 a.m., arrived on scene starting at 2:37 a.m. and cleared the scene by 6:01 a.m.
Identities and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
