A head-on collision early in the morning on State Route 25 left one person dead in the Hollister-Gilroy area.
The crash occurred just south of McConnell Road in the southbound lanes around 4:12 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs.
Logs show the incident was initially reported as a traffic collision with unknown injuries, then updated to a collision with an ambulance en route.
One person was reported trapped in a vehicle with a leg and possibly an arm stuck, and fire crews worked to extricate the individual.
The incident was later changed to a traffic collision with major injuries before being updated to a fatality at 6:06 a.m.
Northbound and southbound lanes were blocked with traffic stopped.
CHP units were assigned at 4:20 a.m., arrived on scene at 4:26 a.m. and cleared the area at 5:42 a.m.
Tow trucks were requested for a green 2006 Lexus IS250 sedan with major front-end damage and a Toyota.
