Late Monday night, a two-vehicle crash on eastbound state Route 20 near Clear Lake left one person dead.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the crash was reported at 10:08 p.m. Callers described a possible vehicle fire, debris blocking the roadway and a vehicle off the roadway. Authorities notified medical personnel, with ambulance en route. The incident was later updated from a collision with ambulance en route to a collision with major injuries.
One party from each vehicle required extrication. Both subjects were initially set to be flown out, but logs later noted one party was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and a second went by ground to Adventist Health Clearlake. No coroner notification was detailed in the logs.
The crash involved a Honda Odyssey and another vehicle in a ditch, with one vehicle over the edge about 50 feet down. A Honda SUV with major damage required a tow truck. An additional involved vehicle, described as a white sedan, may have left the scene, though unconfirmed.
The roadway was blocked in both lanes, with vehicles and fire personnel obstructing traffic. One-way traffic control was implemented around midnight, with the roadway reopened by 1:08 a.m.
Authorities noted the collision involved driving under the influence and resulted in major injuries. A semitruck stopped to provide traffic control with flares. Identities of those involved were not immediately available, and the cause was not detailed in the logs.
CHP units were assigned starting at 10:11 p.m., arrived on scene between 10:31 p.m. and 10:39 p.m., and cleared the scene at 1:19 a.m.
