Pedestrian killed in crash on northbound I-680 off-ramp in San Jose area

A vehicle struck a pedestrian early Friday morning on northbound Interstate 680 at the Alum Rock off-ramp in San Jose, leaving one person dead.

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the incident was reported at 12:29 a.m. when callers described a vehicle hitting a pedestrian who was lying in the middle of the off-ramp. Logs noted a hit-and-run involving the vehicle and pedestrian, with the pedestrian blocking the off-ramp. An ambulance was notified but reported not having the initial call.

San Jose Fire Department requested CHP to block the off-ramp, and units arrived on scene by 12:45 a.m. to handle the closure. The pedestrian was transported to a regional medical center with major injuries.

The off-ramp was blocked shortly after the request and reopened at 1:01 a.m., with flares used for traffic control. Units cleared the scene by 1:34 a.m.

Details on the identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
